Thriving Through the Holidays: Sleep Tips from Giulia, Certified Baby Sleep Consultant for Ages 0–6″
The holidays bring joy, family gatherings, and countless disruptions to your little one’s sleep routine. As a certified baby sleep consultant and mom of two, I know how tempting it is to let routines slide during this festive season. However, consistency is key to avoiding overtired meltdowns (from your little one and you!). Here are my top tips for keeping your child’s sleep on track while still enjoying the magic of the holidays.
You’re the Boss: Schedule Around Your Child’s Sleep
Think of yourself as the CEO of your family’s schedule—your child’s sleep comes first. Don’t be afraid to prioritize their sleep needs over late-night plans. For example, if a family member invites you to dinner at 8 PM, you can kindly suggest an alternative: “We’d love to join, but 8 PM is past bedtime for our little one. How about a lunch or an earlier gathering instead?”
Yes, some people might find this approach overly strict, but they won’t be the ones dealing with an overtired baby the next day! Plus, your family will appreciate how cheerful and engaged your little one is during their awake windows—proving that a well-rested child really is the life of the party.
Adopt the 80/20 Rule
Let’s be realistic—perfection isn’t the goal. Aim for consistency 80% of the time and allow some flexibility during the holidays. A later bedtime or an on-the-go nap here and there won’t completely derail your baby’s sleep. Just make sure these occasional detours don’t become the new routine.
Take the Sleep Setup on the Road
- Pack a portable crib or playpen: If you’re visiting family, set up a quiet sleep space in a separate room. This allows your baby to nap or go to bed on time, while you enjoy the evening with loved ones. When it’s time to head home, gently wake your baby, transfer them to their crib, and let everyone get back to sleep.
- Recreate their bedtime routine: Even if you’re away from home, stick to familiar steps like a bath, story, or lullaby. This signals to your baby that it’s time for sleep, no matter the environment.
- Bring comfort items: Pack your child’s favorite sleep sack, blanket, or stuffed animal. Familiar objects help babies feel secure and settle more easily in unfamiliar places.
- Respect wake windows: Even during busy days, ensure your baby isn’t awake too long between naps. An overtired baby is harder to settle, no matter how cozy their setup is.
Embrace Boundaries with Flexibility
Don’t stress about pleasing everyone. Chances are, your family will marvel at how easily your little one naps or goes to bed, and you’ll all enjoy a more peaceful holiday season.
By setting gentle boundaries and balancing them with a bit of flexibility, you can make the holidays magical while keeping sleep on track.
